Beyond the Crisis in Timor-Leste: Options for future stability and development

Over 200 people attended this extremely successful seminar, which included 12 speakers, including five from Timor-Leste and the Timor-Leste Ambassador to Australia. The discussion covered the background to the current crisis and highlighted the complexity of the problem and the differing views as to how deep seated disagreements have played out. The demands of the newly elected government for both a police and a military force in addition to an intelligence unit without a clear policy or mandate for any of them was considered an important factor in the current problems.
