CONFERENCE OVERVIEW

Encouraging economic systems, linkages and policies that address the needs of the poor is critical if chronic poverty is to be reduced and the Millennium Development Goals met. This requires an understanding of a wide range of alternative economic systems and their impact on the very poor; of risk aversion strategies; opportunities for microfinance; linkages between the poverty reduction strategies and the mainstream; the role of the private sector, practical consideration for women's economic roles and inclusion; and of community perspectives of economic survival and lifestyle improvement. It also requires a full understanding of how best to put pro-poor growth strategies into practice.

The colloquium will bring together key international researchers working in pro-poor growth — economists, anthropologists, community leaders, development workers and policy makers from government and non government organisations, United Nations and regional agencies and universities. They will discuss the results of cutting edge research into financial inclusion, vulnerability and resilience, gender and equality, the ways in which economic growth can be monitored, ways to establish more equality in the access to financial resources and the specific needs of small communities for growth.

To further and consolidate the theme of the symposium, one day will be devoted to discussion on economic models for the Pacific.

As an associated event, ODI will present a workshop that will provide researchers, policy makers and development practitioners from the region the opportunity to learn the latest theory and practical methods for bridging research and policy with a focus on effective economic policy for improving the livelihoods of the very poor.

Places for this intensive workshop are limited to 50.
